Deputy Design Director

The Deputy Design Director uses visual, user experience, interaction, and service design to prototype and design public services to decrease poverty and increase opportunity for New Yorkers. S/he will work closely with design, data and technology team members to enhance and expand our current products and create new services.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and responding to rapid requests. S/he will be influential in setting strategy and managing the design team.


  Responsibilities

  • Lead research, design, prototyping, development, and testing of new and existing public services.
  • Facilitate design process with stakeholders inside and outside government.
  • Provide design feedback across team projects and incorporate team feedback into projects.
  • Conduct user research and testing including outreach, planning, and facilitation.
  • Turn user research insights into actionable items and deliverables, including journey maps, research reports, enhancement lists, etc.
  • Develop wireframes, mockups, final design documentation, and style guides for new and existing services.
  • Design data visualizations and dashboards.
  • Review and maintain design related deliverables from development teams, vendors, and external partners.
  • Contribute to identification of current product enhancements and new offerings including development of strategy, design, deliverables, and final products.
  • Build design capacity across city agencies by producing tools and hosting events
  • Speak publicly, write, and share on social media about our work.
  • Influence design team strategy, process, and methodologies.
  • Manage and cultivate the design apprentice program.
  • Contribute to city-wide design standards and initiatives.

  Skills We're Seeking

Commitment to the mission of advancing greater equality and opportunity through human-centered design practices in government.

Design in any/all of the following practices: user experience, human-centered design, interaction design, user research, data visualization, and service design.

Web and mobile application interface design, including sketching, design production, hand-coded HTML & CSS, rapid prototyping.

Development of research-based deliverables, including journey maps, research reports, enhancement lists, etc.

Facilitation of workshops with diverse stakeholders.

Experience with visual design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, rapid prototyping tools such as Axure, and open development environments such as GitHub.

Strong collaboration with design, technology, and business team members.

Experience with an agile, iterative development process.

Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.


  Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in design, technology or equivalent preferred with 5-7 years of experience in design and digital services development.
